“Tarzan and The Lost Empire” Eric von Harben, a young German specializing in archaeology and dead languages, starts investigating the legend of the Lost Tribe of the Wiramwazi Mountains but mysteriously disappears. Desperate to find his son, Eric's father seeks help from Tarzan. In the search for Eric, Tarzan discovers a lost remnant of the Roman Empire hidden in the mountains of Africa. These remnants are the inhabitants of two rival cities: Castra Sanguinarius and Castrum Mare. Eric, captured and brought to Castrum Mare and introduced as a barbarian from Germany. He falls in love with the daughter of the cities ruler. Meanwhile, Tarzan reaches Castra Sanguinarius, where he tries to gather information about Eric. In doing so, he makes an enemy of the emperor. Betrayed and captured, Tarzan is chained in the dungeon beneath the Coliseum. There he fights as a gladiator against both men and beast, ultimately winning his freedom. This book, the 12th in the Tarzan series was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and illustrated by A. W. Sperry. It was published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1929.
